10 - 24 metre Day & Night Operations

It is designed to ensure you are at the appropriate standard to sit the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal or Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence.

Students should have a thorough knowledge of navigation and chart work to the level of Coastal/Yachtmaster Theory certificate and it is strongly recommended that you hold a First Aid certificate and a VHF operator’s licence.

This course will test knowledge and ability in both theory and practical boat handling to the standard required to pass the appropriate Certificate of Competence.

Yachtmaster offshore C of C to operate in Cat 1 waters up to 150 miles from a Safe Haven & Cat 2 waters up to 60 miles from a Safe Haven.

Yachtmaster Coastal/Coastal Skipper C of C to operate in Cat 3 waters up to 20 miles from a Safe Haven.

This course is often run as a bespoke course depending upon the organisation’s operational requirements.

Areas of Competence will be in:

  • Safety and the Skipper’s responsibilities
  • Preparation & Passage Planning
  • Boat handling in confined areas and at sea
  • Navigation & awareness of electronics
  • Buoyage
  • MOB Procedures
  • IRPCS including Navigation lights
  • Pilotage
  • Emergency procedures including Helicopter Rescue
  • Securing to a mooring buoy
  • Anchoring

 

Yachtmaster Coastal/Coastal Skipper Certificate of Competence:

Qualifying Experience: At least 2 years relevant experience including night pilotage.

As a guide- 30 days – 2 days as Skipper- 800 miles – 12 night hours which can be reduced if a Coastal Skipper Practical course is attended.

Exam: Approximately 4-5 hours for 1 person including ashore/afloat and including night passage.

 

Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence:

Qualifying Experience: 50 days & 5 days as Skipper – 2500 miles -5 passages over 60 miles including 2 overnight and 2 as skipper one of which should have been at night.

Exam: Approximately 5 hours for 1 person including ashore/afloat and including night passage.

Experience needs to be within the last 10 years and at least 50% of qualifying time must be on vessels 10-24 metres.
